Canadian Arctic Polar Bear Excursion - Churchill Polar Bear
Adventure Day Tour – Saturday October 23, 2010

Polar Bear 01Each year in the fall, along the west shore of Canada’s Hudson Bay, one of the world’s most fascinating wildlife events occurs. Scores of polar bears gather along the shore near Churchill, Manitoba waiting for the bay to freeze so they can begin the annual hunt for their choice prey, seals. If one has been fortunate enough to view a documentary that features these Lords of the Arctic, chances are that it was filmed in Churchill from one of the Tundra Buggies.

Tour itinerary

  • 6:45 am - You depart the Calm Air terminal on a Saab 340 aircraft for Churchill. You will receive a light breakfast on board.
  • Polar Bear 029:15 am – You arrive in Churchill. Upon arrival you will be transferred directly to the launch site where you will board your Tundra Buggy for the day. This is a very unique vehicle, well heated, and washroom equipped. The Buggy's over inflated tires allow unparalleled access onto the tundra. Conservation regulations restrict the routes these vehicles can follow in order to protect the fragile ecosystem of this sub-arctic region. The knowledgeable Tundra Buggy driver will make every effort to ensure you have the most favourable conditions to photograph the bears. A platform on the rear of the buggy allows passengers to get an unrestricted view of the bears. A hearty box lunch, prepared locally, will be served on board. You return to Churchill at dusk for a delicious dinner at the Seaport Restaurant. There will also be time to shop for some Inuit soapstone carvings or other local souvenirs.
  • 8:00 pm – Your flight departs for Winnipeg.
  • 10:30 pm – You arrive at the Winnipeg Calm Air Charter terminal.

Price: $1389.00 + 5% GST per person (Price subject to change)

Tour includes:

  • Round-trip airfare between Winnipeg and Churchill
  • Breakfast on the morning flight
  • Full day Tundra Buggy tour with lunch
  • Dinner in Churchill

A $250.00 CAD non refundable deposit per person is due at the time of booking; full payment due August 30, 2010

What to wear

Weather conditions in Churchill can vary quite a bit at this time of year (0° to -15° C; 32° to 5° F), and the possibility of snow or a snowstorm is not out of the question. Additionally, if there is a strong wind, the ‘wind chill’ factor comes into play and that will cause the temperature to drop even lower. Although the Tundra Buggy does have heat, the windows are lowered when bears are spotted so any warmth will quickly disappear. The best way to stay comfortable on the tour is to dress in layers of clothing. Here’s a list of suggested clothes that would be a good idea for you to bring along:

parka, long underwear, snow/ski pants, gloves/mitts, woollen sweater, woollen socks, sunglasses, woollen hat or toque, nylon wind pants, fleece sweatpants, turtleneck sweater, scarf

If you have binoculars bring them as they’ll be useful in scanning the tundra to locate bears and other arctic wildlife.

An information package will be provided to participants who have booked this package.
